How Safe is Freedom of Speech in America Today?

Not very, I'd say, and the real threat to the most precious right we have is coming from somewhere most people would never think to look: The not-so-liberal Left.

Michael Barone has recently written about the threat to our freedom of expression that the so-called defenders of free speech have become. As someone who believes strongly in the 1st Amendment, I find what he has to say quite unsettling.

Obama supporters are doing a lot more than getting into people's faces. They seem determined to shut people up....

In September, St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch and St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce warned citizens that they would bring criminal libel prosecutions against anyone who made statements against Mr. Obama that were "false."

So, who gets to determine what is exactly "false," the government?

Regardless of one's political persuasion, as Americans who cherish true freedom, we have an obligation to see that every one's right to express themselves freely is upheld, else we will all lose in the end.
